The Demise of An Angry Man

By Bassam Shams Addin
Translated by Dr. Hatem Mohammed Al-Shamea

In a world of conflict, exile, and unforgiving landscapes, The Demise of An Angry Man unfolds as a haunting exploration of family, fate, and fury. At its core is Zayd, a boy whose journey through Yemen’s rugged terrain becomes a test of endurance, love, and the weight of heritage. As he travels with his stern father, Jaafar, to reconnect with an estranged aunt, he encounters a world marked by deep-seated feuds, shifting alliances, and the ghosts of the past. Through striking prose and unforgettable characters, Bassam Shams Addin crafts a masterful narrative that captures the tension between tradition and change, loyalty and defiance. Zayd’s coming-of-age story is interwoven with the looming shadow of his father’s unrelenting rage—a force that shapes destinies, shatters ties, and ultimately leads to an inevitable reckoning.

Rendered into English by the acclaimed translator Dr. Hatem Mohammed Al-Shamea, this novel immerses readers in the rich, untamed landscapes of Yemen, where honor and vengeance dictate the rhythm of life, and where the search for identity collides with the echoes of a turbulent past.

A gripping and evocative tale, The Demise of An Angry Man is a poignant meditation on love, loss, and the inescapable pull of history.
