Yemeni Writers: An Anthology of Short Stories
Edited & Translated by Hatem Mohammed Al-Shamea

This anthology provides English readers with a compelling selection of contemporary Yemeni short fiction from some of the country’s most prominent authors. Through 11 powerful stories translated sensitively by Hatem Mohammed Al-Shamea, the collection showcases a diversity of themes and styles that pull back the curtain on Yemeni cultural identities, society, and the impacts of ongoing conflicts.

Ranging from realist portraits of daily struggles to more symbolist examinations of memory and displacement, the stories tackle complex issues like gender, family, poverty, war and its aftermath with empathy and subtlety. Some offer glimpses into rural village life or the routines of urban centers, while others plunge readers directly into harrowing wartime experiences or the dilemmas of exile. Throughout, the translations do justice to each author’s vivid voices and storytelling talents.

With introduction and author biographies providing useful context, this anthology serves as an intriguing entry point for anglophone readers wanting to discover contemporary Yemeni fiction in its original form. It sheds light on underrepresented perspectives and pushes back against one-dimensional media portrayals, inviting us to perceive Yemen and its people in all their nuance and humanity through the eyes of its talented writers.
